“I Feel No More Fear”, meet Jen A!

Meet Jen A.!

She participated in The Beachbody Challenge and won the $500 Daily Prize for December 1st!

Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?

I was sick! So sick with migraine headaches and body pain. I literally developed high blood pressure at age 30! I was sad as well and became very anti- social and insecure. I have over 80 bikinis, and I missed the confidence. I felt like hiding, and I was diagnosed with anxiety depression as well. I had anxiety about how sick I felt, and it became a viscous cycle to be honest. I wasn’t extremely overweight, but I was extremely unhealthy and had lost a great deal of muscle as well.

What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?

My Beachbody Coach, Derek Saunders. He was so consistent in checking in on our group and constantly providing product knowledge along with very necessary emotional support. He invited me to his group, and I did P90X along with Brazil Butt Lift. Waking up to a challenge group ensured that I would push play! I refused to miss a day no matter what. I have two babies, I run a full time 7-5 day home with five kids, I work at a retirement hospital on weekends, and I still committed to making the time to train my body back to where it deserves to be! As a mother, your body is now shared with your kids. They rely on you late at night and early in the morning. Challenge is no longer a choice.

What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody® help you overcome that challenge?

My biggest challenge was actually overcoming the uncomfortable feeling of working out while out of shape. Until this year, I had always been in great condition. So, accepting that I needed a structured and consistent training program was a challenge for me. I could no longer just power walk to lose the weight. I was tired and had lost “trust” in my body. I didn’t believe that exercise would actually provide me with the chemicals that my body needed to fight depression! Eating clean was fun for me as Beachbody makes it so easy and delicious!

Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?

I feel energetic. I obviously look like I’ve lost weight, and I now have abs showing through. But, it was beating the feelings of depression and sickness that make me feel most proud. The idea that I was still capable of sticking through something very challenging and succeeding every day. With this program, honestly, every workout feels like an achievement, and I believe that’s what kept me going.

How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?

I am happier. I have a great deal of energy, and I actually find myself planning events with friends and family rather than avoiding them. I miss work less as I am healthier now. Depression is extremely physical, and when you beat it, you are so liberated! Aside from my emotional well being, I can swim 20 laps no problem, hike in the mountains and go to ANY fitness class with the girls when invited. I feel no more fear. I was actually afraid for my health, and that feeling is gone now! My husband compliments my body several times daily and he says I look better now than when I was 25. He is motivated to stay for now as well and that is the best gift you can give your spouse: positive encouragement and motivation.

You can change your life, too. Take the Beachbody Challenge, for the ultimate motivation to get fit! Select any Beachbody program and once you complete it, share your results for your chance to win cash and prizes.

 MEET JESSICA.....

Hi my name is Jessica Vu, A year ago at this time I was severely overweight, in chronic pain and taking pain pills around the clock. I have bulging discs in my spine and I was having chronic migraines. On top of that I was losing my hair due to reasons unknown. I had a bald spot on the back of my head and I was scared. I couldn't get up and do anything with my precious daughter because I was in pain, not only physically but mentally as well. I had become a prisoner in my own body. On January 14th of 2014 I decided I had to change my life. I started eating healthy and working out to Slim in 6, then in August I ordered the 21 day fix challenge pack and fell in love with another beachbody program! I have lost 97 pounds in less than 10 months! And on top of that few weeks ago I noticed my bald spot that I had for over 3 years is no longer bald! It has hair growing! beachbody has truly saved my life and changed the path of my daughters life as well. I am a monthly winner and the quarterly vote starts today, everyone can vote once a day for 7 days and It would help me so much if you could take the time to vote for me and an awesome guy named David McClain who inspired me to write this! Science proves gluten sensitivity isn't real, people are just whiners

Science Proves Gluten Sensitivity Isn’t Real, People Are Just Whiners

Science Proves Gluten Sensitivity Isn’t Real, People Are Just Whiners

gluten-free
That may be a snarky way of saying it, but it’s true in some cases. Scientific studies have concluded that sensitivity to gluten for people who do not have Celiac disease may be completely psychological.
It is especially relevant in a country where 17 million people may unnecessarily believe that they are gluten-sensitive. (Source: A Mayo Clinic survey in 2012, cited in a NY Times article.)
It is especially shocking in a planet that spent $10.5 billion last year on gluten-free products. (Source: Mintel, a market research company, cited in the NY Times article.)
It is especially important because a psychological disease can spread as fast as any virus but be more enduring.
It is especially lucrative for all the food companies making tons of money off of people like you.

The same scientist who gave strong proof for gluten sensitivity in 2011 now says that it might only be in your head.

Let’s start with some facts to guide you through this topic. Gluten is a protein found in grains. Celiac disease is very real. Gluten triggers really bad symptoms in people with Celiac disease. These symptoms include “depression, ADHD-like behavior, abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, headaches, bone or joint pain, and chronic fatigue” (Source: Celiac Disease Foundation).
That is not a pretty list, and it’s hard not to feel sympathy for those who suffer from these symptoms. Gluten sensitivity is not something you would think millions of people worldwide would be giving themselves, but they might very well be.
There is a term for people who get these gluten-triggered symptoms but who do not have Celiac. The term is non-Celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) or gluten sensitivity for short. This disease is largely self-diagnosed, and studies are starting to show that it may be real in a great number of cases. Professor and scientist Peter Gibson is no stranger when it comes to studying gluten. He did a study in 2011 that gave a lot of credit to the belief in (non-Celiac) gluten sensitivity. Seeing that NCGS had become a worldwide phenomenon, he revisited the topic in 2013 with a critical look at the original assumptions. These are the measures he took to validate his results:
  • Subjects were given every single meal for the duration of the study.
  • Any other potential causes of bad stomach symptoms were removed from the diet. (Think lactose from milk.)
  • Just in case you do not think he was serious, Peter collected nine days worth of urine and fecal matter. (Now that’s a topic of conversation.)

The results were pretty shocking. They concluded that gluten in no way could have caused any of the negative symptoms that the subjects were suffering from.
NOCEBO might sound like the name of the latest trendy NYC neighborhood, but it’s not. It is a term used to denote something perceived as HARMLESS, but actually has harmful effects to people who take it. Gluten was proven as a NOCEBO by the researchers of this medical study. People, who did not take gluten but had thought they were, began to experience a list of symptoms that no one would not want to wish on his or her enemies. In the study’s own terms, “We found no evidence of specific or dose-dependent effects of gluten in patients with NCGS” (Source: No effects of gluten in patients with self-reported non-Celiac gluten sensitivity.). Gibson then had to take the research one step further.
He began to study people who had self-diagnosed their gluten sensitivity. In other words, these were the people who believed they were gluten-sensitive and suffered from symptoms. The researchers “failed to confirm [that] patients with self-perceived NCGS have specific gluten sensitivity.“ (Source: a study titled Is gluten a cause of gastrointestinal symptoms in people without Celiac disease?) The exaggeration of these results is not necessary.
On the back of this, Gibson’s team became less interested in studying gluten itself and more interested in studying people who believed they were gluten-sensitive. He wanted to better understand adults who diagnosed themselves with gluten sensitivity. According to their results, “GFD was self-initiated in 44% of respondents; in other respondents it was prescribed by alternative health professionals (21%), dietitians (19%), and general practitioners (16%).” If you have a friend with “gluten sensitivity,” there is a 44% chance they self-diagnosed. There is only a 16% chance that a gluten-free diet was recommended by a medical doctor.
Jessica Biesiekierski, a member of Gibson’s team, is focused on doing more experiments to prove whether or not non-Celiac gluten sensitivity truly exists. Gibson and Biesiekierski’s have said:
“Non-Celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS), occurring in patients without Celiac disease yet whose gastrointestinal symptoms improve on a gluten-free diet (GFD), is largely a self-reported diagnosis and would appear to be very common.”
“There is definitely something going on,” Biesiekierski told RCS, “but true NCGS may only affect a very small number of people and may affect more extraintestinal symptoms than first thought. This will only be confirmed with an understanding of its mechanism.”

Kaycee Pickard on the 3-Day Refresh

Want a Clean Break From Bad Habits?

The 3-Day Refresh will get your body back on the fast track to weight loss and new healthy eating habits

Watch the video above then ask yourself...
What do you want to achieve in 3 days? Do you want more energy? To feel more like yourself again? More like the happy, confident, fundamentally healthy person you know you can be?
Then keep reading...

Meet My dear friend Kaycee Pickard...

Before I started the 3 day refresh  I was struggling with feeling good physically. Genetically I suffer from constipation. I've never been regular and the more food I would eat the more sick I felt. I really just wanted something to help clear out my system.

1. Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?

My life seems crazy on a daily basis. Between my boyfriend and I we have 5 kids. I dont have much time to myself and when I do have time to myself its spent cleaning and doing all the household chores a stay at home mom has. I also have fibromyalgia which makes some days very difficult for me, mentally and physically. Before I started the 3 day refresh program I felt horrible about myself and my body. Genetically I suffer from constipation. I've never been regular. I don't eat a lot but the more food I would eat the more sick I felt. Ive really just been hoping to find something that would clear me out without all the cramping and running to the bathroom all day. I just wanted to feel better.

2. What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?

There are a few factors that inspired me to begin this transformation. That feeling I have everyday when my clothes don't fit and I don't like what I see when I look in the mirror. My sister in law who has mad motivation, runs marathons, works out in her "pain yard" everyday, sometimes twice a day. I wish I had her energy, motivation and mental strength. My great friend Rachael (beach body coach) inspires me because not only is she a mother of 3, she also makes time for herself while helping others reach their goals to become healthy and lose unwanted weight. I really just want to be able to take the time to improve myself so that I feel better, mentally and physically.

3. What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and your Coach help you overcome that challenge.

The greatest challenge I faced before starting this program is always talking myself out of exercise and making excuses of why I need to change my eating habits. Although my eating habits are not horrible, I do need some discipline on portions and sometimes the simple pleasures in life (desserts). I just simply cant eat the things I used to without gaining weight. Lastly, I tell myself because my man loves me the way I am, I don't need to make any changes. While my coach is a whole other state away from me I find it very difficult to follow through with things. I don't have that "physical" person there pushing me. I finally pushed through and finished the program. That was all due to me....pushing myself towards what I wanted.

 4. What in particular did you like about the program you chose?

What I liked about the program I chose was that it was only for 3 days. That is what I kept telling myself "its only for 3 days, you can do this"

 5. Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?

Within the 2nd day of the program I lost almost 5 pounds.....I didn't like that I felt hungry but I loved the feeling of not having that bloated tight uncomfortable feeling that I live with on a daily basis. #6 Since the program Ive learned what my body can tolerate as far as certain foods. There are now foods that I wont eat a lot of, like breads and pasta, and sugars. Im still looking for that mental strength and motivation to make time for myself to get the exercise I need to get back to the weight where I feel good about myself. The 3 Day Refresh gave me the jump start that I needed.  I am ready to continue this good feeling. I highly recommend it!

Why Do You Gain Weight When You Start Working Out?

Why Do You Gain Weight When You Start Working Out?

Right off the bat, it’s important to note that this doesn’t happen to everyone, so this isn’t a preemptive excuse not to exercise! However, if you do happen to gain a few pounds when starting a new program, odds are that it’s not fat, but rather temporary water weight due to inflammation. Give it some time and it will pass.

That said, it might be a few other things, all of them fixable, so let’s run through the list and see if we can find a match.

The Long Answer

The most likely reason your scale crept up is inflammation. When you work out, it causes little tears in your muscle fibers. This is called microtrauma and it’s why you feel sore after a workout. On the upside, your body heals these little tears, making the fibers tougher than they originally were. That’s how you become stronger and fitter. It’s part of a process called adaptation.

To make these repairs, your body uses its standard healing process, including the inflammation phase—something that’s become a dirty word in our modern world. When you incur injury, including microtrauma, your body releases various substances generally known as inflammatory mediators that swarm the area and perform triage, bringing in healing white blood cells and opening up blood vessels to flush out debris and toxins. There’s so much going on that the area swells up, or inflames.

The fluid required for inflammatory response obviously weighs something—and that might show up on the scale. When inflammation is allowed to occur in a healthy way, it’s temporary.

Of course, keeping your diet healthy and allowing for adequate rest and recovery will help speed the body to less inflammatory phases of healing, but the main key is to keep calm and carry on. If you’re new to fitness—or perhaps just new to a particular kind of fitness—there’s going to be a lot of adaptation going on and therefore a noticeable level of inflammation. It should subside in a couple weeks.

Another less-likely reason you’re gaining weight is that you’re building muscle faster than you’re shedding fat. The general consensus in the fitness community is that the most weight someone new to fitness will gain in muscle is about 2 pounds a month, but that’s not a hard-and-fast number.

On more than one occasion, I’ve assisted women who are frustrated because they felt their new exercise regime was making their thighs fat. Indeed, their legs were getting bigger, but only because increased muscle under adipose tissue was pushing out the fat and making it appear to increase. Again, the trick here is patience. Once that fat burns off—which it does if you keep at it—thick legs will give way to a toned, sexy pair of gams.

But what if something actually is going wrong?

There are a couple situations in which you might actually be putting on fat. The first one would be that you’re not following a proper diet. Yes, exercise burns calories, but it also increases release of ghrelin, a hormone that promotes hunger. So if you’re not paying attention, you’ll probably eat more.

Even if you are eating at a deficit, poor food choices can cause all kinds of issues, usually centered on hormonal imbalances that cause your body to hold onto fat. Every one of Beachbody’s programs comes with some sort of nutrition guide that should alleviate this issue. Don’t be afraid to read the white book that came with your DVDs.

Finally, there’s the issue of excess stress. Exercise is a good thing, but it also puts your body under stress. By itself, that’s great. It’s part of that adaptation I mentioned earlier. If done right with the proper nutritional support, rest, and recovery, it toughens you up, fortifying your body against further stress.

However, when you just pile exercise on top of a bunch of other stress—or if you work out beyond your limits—balance will be lost. Exercise will contribute to your total stress load, becoming part of the problem as opposed to part of the solution.

So if you work twelve hours a day, drink more than two standard alcoholic drinks a night on a regular basis, smoke, sleep less than 7–8 hours a night, eat a junk-filled Standard American Diet or an overly restricted low-calorie diet, and attempt one of our graduate programs when you’re 100 pounds overweight with a history of knee issues, exercise will tax your body just like all the bad habits on that list. In terms of weight gain, this can manifest in a few ways. First, that inflammation we discussed earlier won’t have the chance to give way to later phases of healing. When this happens, it can become chronic and systemic. Second, you’ll promote the release of the stress hormone cortisol that, in turn, can promote fat accumulation—particularly around the abdomen.

I’m not telling you not to exercise. Just the opposite, in fact. However, fitness is a holistic issue. If your goal is to lose weight, build muscle, or get healthier, you might want to take a closer look at your sleep, dietary, and other lifestyle habits. Sparta wasn’t built in a day. If you’re looking for 300-esque abs, it’s going to take a little time (or some expensive CGI), so start with a program you can do and that will keep you motivated instead of burning you out.

Don’t give up. Give your unexpected added pounds a couple of weeks to work themselves out. If they don’t, step back and see if there’s any other aspect of your life that needs fine-tuning.

Message us and We’ll have a look under the hood, and have you back in action in no time.
